5 skin problems that come with the rainy season

As we enter the rainy season, not only is maintaining good physical health crucial to combat various pollutants, but the skin, being the frontline and creating the first impression, especially for those frequently commuting, faces increased risks from environmental contaminants. Here’s why the rainy season particularly affects skin health and how to tackle common skin issues that arise during this period:

Why Does the Rainy Season Affect Skin?

Each season requires specific skincare adaptations. During the rainy season, the high humidity activates the oil glands more than usual, causing pores to expand and potentially get clogged with impurities. This moisture can also foster fungal growth, especially around the hairline.

Moreover, rainwater itself can damage the skin because of its high acidity, leading to dryness, itching, and even small pimples.

How to Address Common Rainy Season Skin Issues:

1. Oily Skin:

The challenge: The humid and clammy weather prompts the oil glands to overact to protect the skin, which can lead to clogged pores, especially around the T-zone and on the body.

The solution: Opt for products suited to oily skin and be cautious about over-washing, which can further stimulate oil production. Use oil-absorbing sheets periodically and choose moisturizers that are appropriate for oily skin to nourish it without exacerbating the issue.

2. Acne:

The challenge: Continuously moist and damp conditions can dehydrate the skin, leading to dryness and itching which results in rash-like acne.

The solution: Cleanse the skin at least twice daily with mild products and keep it moisturized with products suited to your skin type. Gentle care is crucial to avoid further inflammation.

3. Hyperpigmentation:

The challenge: Chronic inflammation can lead to the thickening and darkening of the skin, especially where acne or irritation has occurred.

The solution: Consistently use sunscreen with high SPF and PA++ to protect against UVA and UVB rays, and consult a dermatologist if abnormal pigmentation occurs.

4. Fungal Infections:

The challenge: Known medically as Malassezia Folliculitis or "fungal acne," these tiny bumps occur primarily on the chest and back and are exacerbated by humidity.

The solution: Keep clothes dry and clean to prevent fungal growth, and consult a doctor for antifungal treatment if necessary. Be selective with skincare products to avoid aggravating the condition.

5. Dry and Flaky Skin:

The challenge: Despite the moisture in the air, the skin can become extremely dry and irritated, leading to discomfort and potential inflammation.

The solution: Maintain hydration throughout the day, especially if you are in air-conditioned environments. Regularly apply hand cream after washing and ensure adequate water intake based on your body weight to keep your skin hydrated.

Navigating skin care during the rainy season requires a balance of keeping the skin clean, moisturized, and protected from the elements. Adjusting your skin care routine to combat these seasonal changes is key to maintaining healthy, radiant skin.
